2021 Review - Asking Team Members their Goals - Validating
One of the best things I did in 2021 was asking team members their goals.
When I understood the team member’s goal and that goal aligned with the team’s goal, I started to align work that would help the team member towards their goal.
In a way, this was a test, to validate the team member really wanted this goal or not. Would they be willing to do the work? When they ran into stumbling blocks, what would they do? How would they resolve a blocker to their goal?
This gave real experience to the team member and they also got a chance to experience the reality of their goal.
In the larger context, how would the team feel about the change? What other processes would have to change?
I coached team members on moving towards their goal, suggesting improvements, analyzing their emotional state as they were in new territory.
As the team member accomplished more on their own, I assigned more related work to the team member achieving the goal.
