Getting Things Done - Staying Up Late

The start of this series is here

Previously, I mentioned getting up early to do things. The high variability in that are my kids. They are early risers (and by extension, made us early risers!)

The other option is to get things done after they goto bed - staying up late.

In university, this is a strategy I took on. Some pros and cons:

  • pro: things are quiet
  • con: I have a whole day of stuff in my head
  • pro: my kids are asleep
  • con: I schedule other meetings at night too

The biggest pro is the last one - we have a good bedtime routine for them and they are asleep at a specific time (on average.)

The biggest con is that I have a whole day of stuff in my head. The likelihood of me trying to get more stuff done with a head full of stuff is low. I’ve tried.

I found myself procrastinating so much that doing anything at night after a full day of work is enough of a challenge.

If I do end up doing things at night, I’m likely to stay up later. The problem is: my kids will wake up early at the same time - because we put them to bed at the same time…

Next, I talk about focusing on the spirit of getting things done
